Object detection is a computer vision task where an AI model looks at an image or video and finds specific things—a car, a person, a stop sign—and draws a box around their location. Unlike simpler image classification, which just labels what's in a photo overall ("this is a dog"), object detection also reports where each object is and often how confident the model is in that identification. This requires the AI to scan the image, recognize objects, and provide precise coordinates. It powers many real-world applications, from security cameras to self-driving cars to smartphone cameras that recognize faces for unlocking.

A city installs cameras at busy intersections to help adjust traffic lights in real time. Object detection AI scans the video feed, identifying and counting pedestrians, bicycles, cars, and buses in each direction. When the system detects a surge of elderly or disabled pedestrians crossing, it automatically gives them more crossing time. A parent dropping their child at school benefits from the AI alerting the system that vulnerable road users are present, making the intersection safer.
