Prompt Design
The craft of writing clear, specific instructions or questions to get the best answers from an AI system.
In Plain English
Prompt Design is the practice of carefully composing what you ask an AI to do in order to get higher-quality, more relevant responses. It recognizes that AI systems interpret instructions based on language patterns, so small changes in wording, structure, or context can lead to very different outputs. Good prompt design includes being specific about what you want, providing relevant context, specifying the format you'd like, and sometimes even giving examples. It's become a real skill as AI becomes more central to work—much like learning to write clear briefs or emails.
💡Real-World Example
A marketing manager wants an AI to generate product descriptions. Instead of asking "Write a description," they provide: "Write a 2-3 sentence product description for a wireless headphone targeted at busy professionals. Emphasize battery life, comfort, and sound quality. Use conversational tone." The second prompt gets a much better result because it's specific about audience, length, tone, and priorities.
