The most common question we get is some version of: do I actually have to pay for this stuff?

It's a fair question, and it's surprisingly hard to answer from the outside. Every AI tool's pricing page is designed to move you toward a subscription. Nobody publishes a view across the whole market.

So we built one. We track and review 149 AI tools across our database — chatbots, image generators, writing assistants, video tools, agents, design software. We pulled the pricing on all of them and totaled it up.

Here's what the data actually says.

---

Finding 1: 82% of AI tools have a free tier

Of the 149 tools we track:

Pricing modelToolsShare
Freemium (free tier + paid upgrade)11074%
Completely free128%
Paid only2617%

122 of 149 tools — 82% — can be used without paying anything.

That number surprised us, and it's the most useful thing in this article. The dominant story about AI is that it's expensive. For the tools an ordinary person or small business would actually reach for, it mostly isn't. The industry standardized on freemium because customer acquisition is fiercely competitive and the cost of serving a free user has fallen sharply.

The caveat is real, though: free tiers are limited on purpose. Usually message caps, slower processing, watermarks, or no commercial-use rights. Free is genuinely free — it's just also genuinely limited.

Finding 2: When you do pay, the number is almost always $20

We extracted published prices from every tool with an in-depth review on our site. Across the 34 with clear dollar figures:

Entry priceTools
Under $10/month4
$10–19/month13
Exactly $20/month10
$21–49/month2
$50–99/month4
$100+/month1

Median entry price: $18/month. And 79% of paid tools start at $20/month or less.

The $20 cluster isn't a coincidence. ChatGPT Plus launched at $20/month in 2023 and effectively set the price of a consumer AI subscription. Claude, Gemini, and a long list of others landed on the same number. It has become the default the way $9.99 became the default for music streaming.

What this means practically: if a consumer AI tool is asking more than $20/month, it needs a specific reason. Sometimes there is one — Semrush at $99+ is a full marketing suite, not a chatbot. But "it's AI" is not a reason, and the price band is now well enough established that you can use it as a sanity check.

The full range across our reviewed set runs from $2/month at the low end to $100/month at the high end.

Finding 3: Paying for everything would cost $10,236 a year

If you subscribed to every reviewed tool in our database at its entry price, you'd spend $853/month — $10,236/year.

Nobody does this, and nobody should. But the number is useful as a reference point, because the actual advice follows from it: the skill isn't finding good AI tools. It's refusing most of them.

A realistic stack for a non-technical professional:

  • One general assistant — ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. All three are $20/month. Free tiers are usable for light work.
  • One tool for whatever you do most — writing, image work, transcription, scheduling. Roughly $10–20/month.
  • Everything else on free tiers until something you use weekly hits a limit that costs you real time.
  • That's $0–40/month, not $853. Most people we hear from are well served at the bottom of that range.

Finding 4: Some categories are far more generous than others

Free and freemium availability varies sharply by what the tool does:

    CategoryToolsFree or freemium
    Chatbots & Assistants10100%
    Search & Research6100%
    App Builders4100%
    Coding & Development1392%
    Image Generation1889%
    Video & Audio1883%
    Writing & Content1580%
    Design786%
    Productivity1675%
    Business & Marketing1275%
    Education633%

The pattern makes sense once you see it. Chatbots are in a land-grab for users, so everyone gives them away. Education tools sell to institutions with budgets and don't need a free tier. Business and marketing tools sell to companies where $50/month is a rounding error.

The practical read: if you're experimenting, start in the categories that are 90%+ free. You can do a great deal of useful work in chatbots, research, image generation, and writing without spending anything.

Finding 5: Almost everything is now built for beginners

Of 149 tools, 119 (80%) are rated beginner-level in our reviews — meaning no coding, no configuration, and no technical background required.

Only 6 tools in the entire database require advanced skills.

This is the quiet shift of the last two years. In 2023, using AI well meant learning prompt syntax and tolerating rough interfaces. That barrier has mostly collapsed. The tools that survived did so by becoming usable by people who don't want to think about AI at all.

If you tried AI tools in 2023 and bounced off, the thing that stopped you has probably been fixed.

    The honest counter-case

Three things the numbers above don't capture, and it would be dishonest to leave them out.

Free tiers are a funnel, not a gift. Freemium works because a predictable share of free users convert. Limits are calibrated to be just tight enough to be annoying at the point where the tool has become useful to you. That's not a scam — it's a business model — but go in knowing the free tier is designed to run out.

Prices are not stable. AI companies are, on the whole, losing money on inference. Several have already raised prices or shifted features from free tiers to paid. The $20 standard is a current fact, not a permanent one. Budget for it to drift upward.

Subscription creep is the actual risk. At $20 apiece, no single decision feels expensive. Six of them is $1,440/year, which is real money. The failure mode isn't one overpriced tool — it's five forgotten ones. Put a calendar reminder every quarter to review what you're subscribed to. That single habit is worth more than any tool recommendation in this article.

    How to use this

  • 1.Start free. With 82% of tools offering a free tier, paying before you've hit a limit is paying for a guess.
  • 2.Use $20/month as your reference price. Above it, ask what specifically justifies the premium.
  • 3.Cap yourself at two paid subscriptions until you can name what each one saves you in hours.
  • 4.Audit quarterly. The waste is in the subscriptions you forgot, not the ones you chose.

Methodology: Figures compiled from the AI Foresights tool database and published review pages, August 2026. Pricing tiers cover all 149 tracked tools. Dollar figures reflect the 34 tools with published entry pricing in their in-depth reviews. Entry price means the lowest paid tier, billed monthly. Annual-billing discounts are excluded. Prices are US dollars and change frequently — verify with the vendor before purchasing.
